The village of Hightae is a thriving community, offering the best of rural living, with a local primary school, community groups and the local hotel has a restaurant and bar. Hightae lies approximately four miles from Lockerbie and approximately three miles from Lochmaben, and is therefore well placed to take easy access to the nearby M74 motorway and is within easy commuting distance of the County town of Dumfries (around twenty five minutes away by car). Main shopping can be obtained in nearby Lockerbie or Dumfries, which has two cinemas, national chain stores and is the main local shopping centre. There is a well-regarded village school with secondary schooling to sixth-year level available in nearby Lockerbie.

Hightae is also, along with Heck, Greenhill and Smallholm, one of the “Royal Four Towns”, so called due to the service of the then residents to the Bruce family in the 1300s. The fishing rights on the River Annan were established by Royal Charter from Robert the Bruce, a free fishing permit is available to village residents.
