The Royal Burgh of Lochmaben was so created in or around 1479, but its documented existence can be traced back to 1170, when Robert de Brus, Lord of Annandale, gifted the revenues from Lochmaben Church to Guisburgh Abbey. It is, of course, the connection with the Bruce family, and Robert the Bruce in particular, that Lochmaben is so proud of, as can be seen by the imposing statue at the head of the town’s High Street.
